Sherman’s March – 4K Restoration

About this event

40th Anniversary Screening Winner—Grand Jury Prize, 1987 Sundance Film Festival In this classic doc from 1986, director Ross McElwee sets out to make a film about a famous campaign during the American Civil War. But when a nasty breakup knocks him off course, his historical investigation turns into a deeply revealing and hysterically unsuccessful search for love. The resulting “meditation on the possibility of romantic love in the South today” is a comedic delight, an eclectic road movie propelled by McElwee’s wry narration and his eagle eye for offbeat Americana. In the 30 years since its initial award-winning release, Sherman’s March has only grown in stature and influence, securing a reputation as one of the great comedic masterpieces in the history of documentaries. It’s the crowning achievement of one of American cinema’s most original voices. Will Di Novi, Hot Docs
