Small Movements: A Performance by Adam Basanta
Join us at MOCA for an intimate sound performance by multimedia artist Adam Basanta. Using tuned microphone feedback, modified amplification techniques, and kinetic elements, Basanta creates delicate sonic compositions with handheld microphones, speakers, cassette recorders, custom software, and everyday objects. This performance is presented within Sara Cwynar’s exhibition Baby Blue Benzo Beta. While Cwynar’s work examines how images, technology, and systems of value shape our desires and understanding of the world, Basanta turns our attention to the hidden mechanics of sound production and perception. The performance will be presented twice, at 6 pm and 7:30 pm.

Drawing inspiration from the hard-hitting salsa and Latin sounds of 1970s New York, the orchestra was created by brothers Sergio and Santiago Mejía Rocca, along with Guillermo Celis, in a house on Calle 33 in the Teusaquillo neighbourhood, giving the group its name. Blending rock influences, original lyrics, and fresh arrangements, La-33 has become a symbol of Colombian salsa. Over more than 20 years, they’ve performed over 1,500 concerts across five continents, establishing themselves as one of today's most successful independent salsa groups. La Pambelé is a salsa brava orchestra redefining Colombia’s tropical and alternative music landscape by revisiting the sonic traditions of 1970s salsa brava while infusing them with contemporary lyrical narratives. Their sound bridges nostalgia and modernity, which one of Colombia’s leading media outlets described as “a new approach to old-school salsa.” The ensemble’s nine musicians bring together a rich instrumentation: piano, congas, flute, trumpet, timbales, trombone, bongó, cowbell, baby bass, and vocals, crafting a dynamic and high-energy performance designed to move both body and soul. Emerging from Bogotá at 2,600 meters above sea level, La Pambelé takes its name from a Bantu term meaning “defender of one’s own,” while also paying homage to the legendary Colombian boxer Antonio Cervantes Reyes, aka " Pambelé ". Composed of musicians from across the country, the group challenges long-held assumptions about the capital’s musical identity, asserting Bogotá’s place within Colombia’s rhythmic and cultural heritage.

The Glass Orchestra
To complement the Summer 2026 exhibition, Plague Crystals by Natalia Romik, Koffler Arts is pleased to present The Glass Orchestra . Throughout its documented history of over 2,000 years, glass music has surfaced in many different cultures and forms. Founded in 1977, The Glass Orchestra (GO)— a quartet with Rick Sacks, Bill Parsons, Paul Hodge and Eric Cadesky —carries on the long tradition of glass music by designing, building, and playing glass instruments of all shapes and sizes, which altogether weigh half a ton! Drawing on a wide range of musical influences and performance techniques, the GO explores the unique sonic properties of glass, creating an ethereal, percussive soundscape with a vast array of glass instruments, both “found” and custom made. (The skill of the members in designing and making glass instruments has earned them a place in the New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments.)

We are thrilled to have Project Grizzly back at Hot Docs Cinema! This screening is being re-presented due to the epic blizzard which snowed out our last showing in January. An inventor goes face to face with Canada’s most deadly land mammal, the grizzly bear, in this Canadian classic that gained cult status, not to mention praise from director Quentin Tarantino and a loving parody on The Simpsons . After creating what he hopes is a grizzly-proof robo suit, Troy James Hurtubise ventures into Alberta’s Rocky Mountains on a quixotic quest to face a grizzly bear, testing his armour—and courage— along the way. Moonlight Ballet reawakens this living garden in a new light. The story begins in the present day and follows the fates of three artists, but reality and imagination begin to blur. Inspired by the theatrical spectacle of the Gardens of Versailles, the journey unfolds through a sequence of shifting scenes—ornamental pathways, curated florals, exquisite sculptures, and dramatic fountains.
